•    Celebrate: Tell the stories in weekend services and in small groups.Share the celebration with other local churches on the ORPAC district.

Christ is the first and last hope for the world.

We know the headlines are discouraging. Oregon has the 7th highest unemployment in the US. The economy is stalled in Oregon . . . in the nation . . . and throughout the world. For much of the world, money is a driving force determining the outcome of our daily lives. So, the troubled economy equates troubled living in the world. Hope fades.

Hope is resurrected through asking Christ into our lives. We discover authentic and sustaining hope when we invite Christ into our life and experience the activity of God. Then, through the hope of Christ . . . serious change . . . real change . . . occurs and we are defined by our God-driven purpose that determines the outcome of our life.

It makes sense that if the local church unites, then, the message of the hope of Christ will be seen and heard. Now more than ever, we need to UNITE on 10-10-10 as part of a revolution to impact the world.

Your local church leaders, volunteers, classes, and small groups need to know why UNITE 10-10-10 is worth the time and effort. Ask the question in the ways it will impact in your church context and culture whether it is in your weekend services, classes, small groups, or volunteer opportunities:

What is UNITE 10-10-10?
It is praying for 1,000 people to accept Christ in the ORPAC district from 10-10-10 to 5-19-11 (ORPAC District Assembly).
It is pursuing those that are hopeless and without Christ with the message of the hope of Christ.
It is asking 1,000 people to commit themselves to Christ.
It is discipling the 1,000 new Christ followers to grow and join the church in the call to bring the message of hope to the world..

It is something bigger than you and I.
It is impossible without the revolutionary power of the Holy Spirit.
It requires a sustained focused and effort for seven months.
• Why are we asking for 1,000 people?
Why not think big? When it comes down to it, the 1,000 people are the most important people to focus on in the district this coming year. God has a plan for each one of the 1,000: Jeremiah 29:11 . . . For God knows the plans . . . plans of hope.

• What can an individual do?
Specifically pray and then ask 10 people to accept Christ.

• Why you? Why me? Why us? Jeremiah 29:11 is at the heart of the Great Commission, a challenge for the local church to execute hope to the world. The local church is the most important to the 1,000 individuals in the district.

It is impossible without the revolutionary power of the Holy Spirit.
It requires a sustained focused and effort for seven months.

Specifically Ask For Commitment

First Things First . . . Commit

1.    Commit to pray.
Pray with authority in the name of Jesus for one or more specific individuals and 1,000 people to become Christ followers on a daily basis, asking for Matthew 6:10 . . . Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

2.    Commit to pursue.
A vital component of prayer is aligning ourselves with what we are asking God through our mindset and actions . . . renew the mindset of the local church of what it means to relentlessly “go” into the neighborhood, workplace, etc. by making personal connections with people who do not know Christ . . . impacting individuals in the power of the Holy Spirit.
Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Matthew 28:18-20.

3.    Commit to disciple.
Prayerfully strategize and put together a discipleship plan with the goal to “make” fully committed Christ followers who will join the local church to bring hope to the world. Keep it simple.
"The most important one," answered Jesus, "is this: 'Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.' 31 The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no commandment greater than these." Mark 12:29-31

Encourage small groups to commit to Unite 10-10-10.

Ask small groups leaders and hosts to enlist their small group.

    * Pray together for specific people and 1,000 people.
    * Schedule times of fasting.
    * Discuss ways to connect with others that lead to a connection with Christ.
    * Celebrate together when someone comes to Christ.
    * Study the life of the early church in the book of Acts.
    * Plan how to reach out and disciple those who come to Christ.
       * Keep the question in focus:

How can I make a difference in this world?

3. Teach the great commission in today’s language and experience.
4. Present the vision of the potential impact of UNITE 2010.
5. Communicate and consistently focus on the big picture.

6. Lay out the process (aim high—the church will go as high as the leader).
7. Equip and empower the church.
9. Encourage all ages to participate on a personal level.
10. Ask each person to pray every day for the local church
and all the churches on the district.

1. Pray. Ask the prayer team to be present and praying in services.

2. Plan high energy worship.

3. Pray corporately, focused on commitment with God and one another.

4. Present the vision of UNITE 2010 . . . “for such a time as this.”

5. Place prayer stations in sanctuary.

9. Commit to maximize the impact by signing pledge cards to pray, pursue, and disciple.

10. Commission each individual to do what God has called them to do to pray, pursue, and disciple.

1. Fast. Teach and experience what God will do in and through us when we fast. Set aside a day/weekend/time period to fast.

2. Discuss the vision of UNITE . . . 1,000 new Christ followers become part of the kingdom . . . bringing the message of hope to others in services/small groups/newsletters.

3. Continue to equip and empower the church to pursue . . . simple acts of kindness . . . points to connect with those who need Christ..

4. Light the candle for new Christ followers, tell their story.

5. Create a space for testimonies of new Christ followers in services/ small groups/newsletters.

6. Launch a new discipleship plan—a transformative experience for the whole church. Example: basic boot camp to refresh Christ followers and to teach new Christ followers the basics of following Christ, strategy class to help format a plan of how to live in Christ, classes to catalyze faith, and small groups.

7. Provide the SHAPE evaluation and opportunities to serve for new Christ Followers as well as mature.

8. Launch new small groups targeting mature and new Christ followers to synergize. Try a small group café to help people find their fit in a small group.

9. Create a space for people to pray on Sunday mornings and during the week—a prayer room. Train prayer leaders to host the room. Develop healing prayer teams with emphasis on the salvation of an individual.

10. Pray Matthew 6:10 . . . your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Tell the stories of what occurs when individuals pray this prayer on a daily basis.

UNITE 10-10-10 is bigger than us . . . it is God-driven:
We must depend and have faith in God when we do something bigger and greater than ourselves.

Take time for focused prayer through fasting. Check with your doctor before you fast from food. If, you are unable to fast meals . . . fast from a daily activity . . . something that is important to you.

Pray about fasting. The discipline of fasting must be God-driven in order to accomplish the purposes of God by fasting. The thing is . . . fasting brings us closer to the heart of God, produces clarity, releases oppression and/or depression, and opens the door to the power of God in prayer. The signal of hunger alerts us to the need to draw closer to God in prayer.

It does take discipline to refuse to give into hunger pains. In the book, Celebration of Discipline by Richard Foster describes ways to fast:
1.    Normal Fast: Abstain from food and drinks but not water. Skip three meals. Drink plenty of water. (See Luke 4:2).
2.    Partial Fast: Restrict part of a your diet. Skip two meals and drink juice. (See Daniel 10:3)
3.    Absolute Fast : Abstain from food and drink for a period of time. Some fast three to seven days. (See Esther 4:16)
4.    Biblical Fast extends for several days and is restricted to drinking only water, which has been known to last up to 40 days.

Jesus said, “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Matthew 6:16-18

Note: Jesus said “when” not “if.”

Consider setting regular times to fast and pray from 10-10-10 through 5-19-11. The discipline of fasting provides an opportunity to focus more on God. The hunger alarm becomes a signal to draw closer to God. Fasting is a way to experience a deeper place with God. And, in the end we are more balanced and focused. We fast for the purpose of God not for self.
